Som tam is a classic Thai dish, one of the most popular Thai salads. Originally, it's made with flavorless papaya, which is readily available and inexpensive in Asia. Since it's expensive and rare in Poland, you can substitute it with local kohlrabi, add carrots, tomatoes, and dressing. The dressing is key here – fresh, refreshing, spicy, and delicious!

Ingredients

  • 400 g carrots, grated into long strips
  • 400 g kohlrabi, grated into long strips
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 4 chili
  • 4 pods of long green beans or 8 pods of green beans
  • 4 teaspoons of peanuts
  • 6 teaspoons of dried shrimp
  • 4 tomatoes (not cherry), seeded

Spices:

  • 8 teaspoons coconut sugar
  • 6 teaspoons fish sauce
  • 6 teaspoons lime juice

A method of preparing

  1. Crush the chili with the peeled garlic in a mortar
  2. Add the dried shrimp and grind until crushed.
  3. Add the toasted peanuts and crush them
  4. Add sugar, fish sauce, lime juice, and mix everything together.
  5. Add the carrots and kohlrabi and mash until all ingredients are well mixed.
  6. Add the beans cut into 2-centimetre pieces and the chopped tomatoes, knead for a while and it's ready.
