Diverse and full of unique flavors, Indonesian cuisine is known for its numerous aromatic spices and rice dishes with meat, fish, and seafood. Coconut milk, mango, bananas, and peanut paste are also a must-have. Kecap Manis, a sweet soy sauce with added spices, complements the flavor, as does the spicy chili sauce. Sambal OelekThe most popular Indonesian dish is nasi goreng, fried rice with seasonal vegetables and an egg—fried or beaten. Sometimes meat and chili are also added. If the dish is made with noodles instead of rice, it is called mie goreng. Lime, egg, fried onion, shallots, chicken, coconut milk, and the beloved rice can also be added to the soup.

And it's rice that's the main ingredient in Nasi Padang. Along with it, the plate features an aromatic sauce containing curry paste, coconut milk, galangal root, kaffir lime leaves, garlic, shallots, and fish or meat. Juicy chicken skewers called satay or sate ayam are very popular in this region's cuisine. They are prepared in a unique way – marinated, then grilled over charcoal and served with a peanut dip. Also worth trying are the fried chicken, or ayam goreng (crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside), as well as the rawon soup made with beef and black keluak peanuts, whose flavor is reminiscent of chocolate. Tourists visiting Indonesia and enjoying popular street food spots should definitely try the Indonesian Gado Gado salad. Its ingredients vary greatly depending on the season and region. Typically, the salad is vegetarian and includes boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, sprouts, tofu, and chopped cabbage. A constant ingredient, however, is the spicy and very aromatic peanut sauce.
